By Julia Evans AT NIGHT, the fresh tarmac of Islington’s new Waterloo Business Park becomes a race track for cars, motor-cycles and even karts. Those living in nearby residential Brixton, Wilson and Mortlake Sts are being kept up by a chorus of revving, skidding, racing and burnouts. And when developers of the business park go to work on a Monday morning, they often find empty bottles and rubbish strewn across footpaths, gardens and the street, as well as the black tyre marks all over the roads. Residents and businesses are fed up, Waterloo Business Park project manager Ashley McLachlan said. “Sadly, there has been a small number of people using the roads and parks in a destructive manner, which impacts on the businesses based here and our neighbours. We want people from our community to feel welcome and safe,” he said. •Turn to page 5

Inside

FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK THERE’S A great appeal starting at your local Countdown supermarket next month. And if you look at our front page photo today you will understand why. The annual Countdown Kids Hospital Appeal starts early next month and every dollar that goes into it helps children like eightyear-old Jacob Matua. The tremendous smile Jacob had for the camera belies the perilous situation he – and many others like him – are in. Each year, Countdown supermarkets run an appeal to help provide equipment for patients using Christchurch Hospital’s paediatric and neo-natal services. And the good news is: Jacob is doing well. “He’s making great progress,” his aunt says. – Barry Clarke

Motorway to open a year earlier

THE WESTERN Corridor project is almost a year ahead of schedule. And the $112 million Russley Rd upgrade is on track to open early next year. “The early completion of the project would help relieve congestion and support economic growth in the Canterbury region,” Transport Minister Simon Bridges said. He said the 10 months that has been shaved off the timetable comes down to good weather and contractors bringing down extra resources as well as staff. By the end of next month, traffic will be travelling from the airport to the city under the

overbridge and, by the end of the year, traffic on State Highway 1 would travel over the overbridge. The Russley Rd upgrade is one of the six sections of the $350 million Western Corridor upgrade from Belfast to Hornby to a four-lane, median-separated highway. Three of the six sections are completed with the remaining three under way and will be completed by the end of next year. PROGRESS: The airport arches are 10 months ahead of schedule. Toilet block looking likely for Harrington Park By Julia Evans RESIDENTS HAVE been asking for toilets in Harrington Park for more than a year – those calls have finally been answered. At the city council Annual Plan meeting, it approved $115,000 to go towards the block of public toilets. Last year, residents living in the Riccarton west area called

for the public toilets because of the high usage of the park during community days. There are three linked reserves including Harrington Park, Paeroa Reserve and Shand Crescent Reserve but there are no public toilets. The closest are at Westfield Riccarton or The Warehouse on Blenheim Rd. Eight submissions were made to the city council for last year’s Annual Plan, representing sev-

eral community groups. But at the time, city council head of parks Andrew Rutledge said the focus for public toilets was on sports, garden parks and heritage sites, where the user numbers are significant. However, Mr Rutledge said during this year’s Annual Plan process staff were again asked whether Harrington Park would meet the criteria for the provision of a toilet block.

LIBRARY GONE The new Bishopdale Library and Community Service Centre will be officially opened at 9.30am on Saturday, July 22. There will be kapa haka performances from Breens Intermediate and Islesworth Primary. News Watery way to read central city poem By Julia Evans SAMANTHA Jory-Smart’s literary work is now part of the city’s history. But her poem, A Promise, can only be seen when it’s wet. The Burnside High School student was asked to write the poem to feature on one of the central city laneways. The Mollett St block of the South Frame was recently opened by Minister supporting Greater Christchurch Regeneration Nicky Wagner. It features a pounamu built into the pavement. But it is more importantly the home to the country’s first raining poetry installation. Samantha’s poem has been printed onto the pavement in invisible chemical spray that only reveals itself when wet. She said the poem came from a mix of wanting to include Maori culture, a tale about the mataī tree, and create a sense of Christchurch’s regrowth. “It’s amazing to contribute to Christchurch and be a part of the rebuild,” Samantha said. Mrs Wagner helped Samantha unveil the poem by pouring water from a watering can over it. She said it was exciting Mollett

Bid to stop hoons at business park •From page 1 Business park developers have organised security patrols and are in the midst of organising security cameras so they can gather evidence, which will then be passed on to police. And the city council is also offering a hand to try and deal with the “anti-social” behaviour. It is proposing restricted access to roads in the park Ashley McLachlan at night, as part of the prohibited times on road’s bylaw. “The proposed restrictions will assist the city council, police and residents in addressing the unsocial and destructive behaviour that has been happening in the business park,” Mr McLachlan said. The restricted access will also work with no stopping along Halswell Junction Rd, Pound Rd and Waterloo Rd. The restrictions would apply from 10pm to 5am, seven days a week. Streets that could be restricted

Another wheelie bin fire sparks further fears By Andrew King ANOTHER WHEELIE bin has been set alight in Burnside fuelling further fears for residents’ safety. For the past three months bins on the street and on driveways, near houses, have been deliberately set on fire in the Burnside, Bryndwr and Ilam areas. The latest arson was on Memorial Ave, near the intersection of Greers Rd, at about 3.30am on Saturday. Police are following up the incident. Last Saturday, six wheelie bins were set alight with Detective Sergeant Mike Freeman urging the perpetrator to talk to them before anyone is seriously hurt. “Police are treating the incidents as arson and believe they are linked to previous wheelie bin fires in the area,” Detective Sergeant Freeman said. The previous four attacks were in May but there had been a period of at least a month where there had been no fires. Residents in the area have also been told by police to keep their wheelie bins out of sight.

Countdown to supermarket Countdown‘s upcoming appeal will help provide equipment for patients using Christchurch Hospital’s paediatric and neo-natal services. Sarla Donovan visited cancer sufferer, eightyear-old Jacob Matua, who benefits from the equipment JACOB MATUA has visited this place many times. He’s in the Children’s Haematology and Oncology Centre in the Riverside building at Christchurch Hospital, where’s he’s hooked up to an infusion pump dispensing the medicine he needs. It’ll be 10pm before this day’s treatment is over. After the eight-year-old started getting “headaches and tummy pain, neck pain, arm pain,” at the end of last year, a cancer diagnosis followed, along with nearly three months in hospital, getting treatment. Now he comes in for shorter stays – four days this time – and is crossing his fingers that he

can return to his Clyde Rd home tomorrow. Jacob’s not well enough to

attend his school, Burnside Primary, at the moment. He couldn’t even eat his birthday

chocolate cake in May: “Because sometimes I don’t eat,” he said. Charge nurse manager Chrissy

Bond lightens the mood: “I wish I could say that!” The nurses play cards with him, including memory and skip bo. Lucy Stephenson, who is supervising today, says he’s quite the card shark. “I win every time,” Jacob says with a grin. His aunt Ula Faamoe sits with him, too, giving his mum – who has four other children including twin three-year-old’s – a break. She says he’s well at the moment: “The best I’ve seen him since starting the chemotherapy. He’s making great progress.” Beside his bed, a tall pump stand holds all kinds of medicines and beeping equipment. The $5000 stand is one of four in the centre, purchased with money from the Countdown Kids Hospital Appeal in 2013. Mrs Bond said it holds five to six pumps and keeps the medicines stable, as well as allowing nurses to easily read information on screens attached to the pumps. “DHBs find equipment like this hard to fund, because we can ‘make do’ with inferior (devices). It isn’t essential, but it just makes everybody’s life easier,” she said.

Last year’s appeal raised $123,270 for Christchurch Hospital’s paediatric wards and neo-natal unit. Countdown Kids Hospital Appeal chairwoman Ruth Krippner says most kiwi kids will visit hospital at some stage in their childhood. She said Countdown is proud to play a part in helping provide these hospitals with the equipment needed to treat illness and injury. “Whether it’s a one off visit for a minor injury or a lengthy stay for a serious illness, most New Zealand children will have a brush with a children’s hospital ward at some point– just like this family,” Ms Krippner said. “Thanks to the generosity of our customers and the fundraising efforts of the Countdown

teams, we’re able to help provide hospitals with the much neededequipment to treat thousands of Kiwi kids. Last year, we raised more than $1.1 million, and we’re hoping to do the same this year.” Meanwhile, Jacob is busy putting on his “best face” for the photographer. “Does a picture come out of that?” he asks.

To the hypnotic beat of djembe drums and breath-taking lighting effects, Riccarton High School’s Disney’s The Lion King Junior created joy and magic. Six capacity audiences gasped, cheered, wept, laughed and were enchanted by the school’s latest musical production. Principal’s assistant Karen Churchward said the singing, acting and dancing was of a professional quality. “The brilliant set, stunning costumes, masks and make-up that morphed students into vibrant African birds and amazing animals delivered creative magic and delight,” she said.

An artisan is someone who is highly skilled in a particular expertise, a hands-on craftsman – someone who is passionate about the quality results they produce. With decades in the business the team at Artisian Homes have worked in all areas of residential construction. There are obvious differences between building a two-bedroom

Building with difficult access, looming timelines or tight budgets is just a fact of life for us. All our tradespeople are qualified and registered or licensed. LEARN TO SWIM

The new Swimsmart Membership is here! The new Swimsmart membership offers a new approach to learning to swim. Swimsmart members will get free, unlimited access to all Christchurch City Council pools outside of regular lesson times. This provides kids with extra opportunities to practise their swimming skills! Customers will now be able to enrol for a membership that offers up to 48 weeks of lessons per year. The new membership also allows customers to pay on a more regular basis via direct debit instead of paying for a full term up front.

Grading of children’s swimming skills occurs on a regular basis, so they can move up a level as soon as they’re ready. If there’s no space available at that level at a suitable time, your child will go on a waitlist and get some advanced instruction at their current level. Book now to secure your child’s spot! Call (03) 377 7690, email swimsmart@ ccc.govt.nz or visit the Swimsmart offices at Jellie Park, Graham Condon or Pioneer to book. For more information check out www.ccc.govt.nz/swimsmart

Giant Fantasy Sand Castle at The Hub These school holidays The Hub Hornby will be hosting a team of artists to construct a giant fantasy sand castle. Lead by artist Asheley Elizabeth the team have worked on sand sculptures both locally and overseas and their work has been recognised by some of the world’s leading sand sculptors. The same team created the very popular Creatures at Leisure sand sculpture at The Hub previously which was New Zealand’s largest indoor sand sculpture at the time. Utilising stacked wooden forms the sand is compacted one layer at a time until the final height is reached. The top form is then removed and the artists start carving form the top down removing each form as they work their way downwards. The sand is kept damp throughout the process

The sculpture will be created in the Centre from 10 July onwards with the finished sculpture on display from 17-22 July.

PROUD PLAYERS: St Thomas’ under-12 blue and under-13 teams hold the challenge shields for their grades with an eye to hold on to them for the final three games in the regular season. PHOTO: BRENDAN BIGGS

St Thomas’ junior sides try The Automotive Lamp Specialists for double the silverware By Andrew King TWO ST Thomas’ junior rugby teams now hold shields in their competitions and are looking to get their names etched on them at the end of the season. The under-12 blue team won their shield last week from Christchurch red, who had held it for most of the season. The under-13 team won the shield in the first game of the season and have successfully defended it for 11 weeks.

Saturday was no exception with St Bede’s defaulting. The shields were created in 2005 and it is the first time St Thomas’ teams have held both of them at the same time. A glance at the names etched on them shows no school has held them both at the end of the season, something the college wants to change. There are three more games in the regular season and, if they can hold on to the shields for those, the teams will have

their names engraved, then lock the shields away until next season. The shields are not defended during the finals. School sports coordinator Neville Brooker said it is a great thing for the future of rugby at the college. “Junior rugby is very strong (and), as a school, we have decided to put a lot of time and coaching resource into this age group to try and develop the rugby players from a young age,” he said.

GREAT VICTORY: Burnside High will look to hold onto the Connetics Shield after missing out on the national competition. PHOTO: BURNSIDE HIGH

BURNSIDE HIGH is ruing poor early season form which has cost them a spot in the nationals. But coach David Williams is not looking to blame outside forces, saying it was gutting but entirely their own fault. Four teams were selected from the Connetics first XI football competition to compete at the Boys Lotto Premier Football Tournament in Napier from September 4-8. “A draw against Shirley and letting Cashmere back into the game, which also ended up being a draw, didn’t help. If either of those games had of been a win instead of a draw, then we would be in Napier,” he said. St Andrew’s College, St Thomas, Lincoln High and Cashmere High have all made the cut for the 32-team national tournament. The teams were picked during round eight when the top four included the selected teams. Burnside were fifth in round eight, but have since moved to third after wins against Middleton Grange and Lincoln High. In their match against Lincoln, Burnside also won the Connetics Shield for the first time. However, Burnside were denied a wildcard entry into nationals, with

Nelson’s Waimea College and Wellington College snapping up the last two spots. “We will now focus on trying to win the Rex Dawkins tournament in Palmerston North,” Williams said. That tournament runs at the same time as nationals. Williams said with two games and a bye left in the Connetics competition, the goal is to finish strong and hold on to the Connetics Shield. The competition now takes a threeweek break and will resume on July 26 for three rounds before the finals. Burnside will not want to let go of the shield when they face Christ’s at 5.45pm at the Christchurch Football Centre, where all league games are being played this year. Christchurch Boys’ High will take on Lincoln at 4pm, St Bede’s will play Shirley at 5.45pm, St Andrew’s will try to stay top of the table when they face St Thomas at 7.30pm and Papanui will resume their season against Riccarton at 7.30pm. Feet First, the long-established podiatry clinic in Upper Riccarton, now has a much more efficient and effective means of dealing with the problem of fungal nails, thanks to a new machine they recently obtained from Britain, where it was designed and trialled. Clearanail is a procedure where the Podiatrists use a machine to make tiny holes in the nail without affecting the nail bed – a completely pain-free procedure that then allows the topical application of antifungal solution to directly reach the problem area. Fungal nails may cause the toenail to thicken, which consequently can make shoes feel uncomfortable. Anyone who believes they have a fungal infection of the nails is invited to make an appointment for a consultation with Feet First so one of the qualified Podiatrists can assess if that is the case, and if so, will recommend the Clearanail procedure. This involves the initial treatment, and three follow-up appointments at monthly intervals to check progress. “Fungal nail infections won’t disappear immediately,” clinic director Charlotte Russell says, “so people need to commit to the process, which can take up to four months as the nail grows.” She says now is an ideal time to start fungal nail treatment with Clearanail, so nails will be looking healthy again when the warm, sandal-wearing weather arrives. Feet First has an introductory offer on Clearanail until the end of July. Call them on 348-7910 for details.
